4AM Thoughts on #Beyonce’s #Formation

If you haven’t seen the video, watch it. The song is dope, the video is dope, the Super Bowl halftime show was dope.

You should also read the critical analysis (and here) that has sprung up in recent days — it’s really good stuff.

But for some reason, I’m having a tough time divorcing Beyonce and her acts of pro-blackness from the fact that she is also a brand. And I’m struggling with the tension between her celebrity and her activism. It leaves me sitting here at 4:00 am unable to come to any kind of resolution.

To be clear, I’m not anti-Beyonce. Quite the contrary, I like her music and I appreciate her abilities. And to the extent that she has influence and resources — I think she uses hers better than most celebrities.

I’m merely trying to figure out what it all means. To be the beneficiary of a capitalistic, consumerist system — to the tune of $450 million in net worth. To offer that our ‘best revenge is our paper‘. To ‘slay’… all while leading a troupe of black women dressed as Black Panthers at the Super Bowl.
